Excerpt from Chapter 1 (pictures below)

My initiation into Catholicism started early in life. The major architect was my Great Grandmother, Adwoa Anasa (Madam Adjua Anderson: also known as Mame Panyin).

I recollect that at the age of five (1939), all the members in the household were summoned to the bedroom of Mame Panyin at 5:30 a.m. to kneel around her bed for morning prayers. This ritual consisted of making the sign of the Cross and saying:

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. (In the Fantse Language – Egya, Oba on ye Sunsum, Kronkron. Onye ho.)…

My life story revolves around my Great Grandmother and her daughter, Ama Fransiwa (Francisca Barrent -also known as Mame Kakraba) my Grandmother.

Ama Fransiwa had six Children:

1. Papa Takyi (Joseph Turkson) – born 1911

2. Adwoa Kuma (Emelia Turkson) – born 1913 MY MOTHER

3. Efua Amoasiwa (Sabina Turkson) – born 1915

4. Ekua Nyarkoa (Cecilia Turkson) – born 1918

5. Kobena Ackon (Sandy Turkson) – born 1920

6. Adwoa Serwa (Mary Awile) – born 1927
