In the 1930’s, marriage in the Gold Coast was considered a family affair. Most marriages were arranged by older members of the family. The couples did not choose their own partners. In many cases, the couple just accepted the partners chosen for them by their parents or other responsible and respectable members in the family.

In the case of my parents, the marriage arrangement was made between my grandmother, Ama Fransiwa and Mame Asuantsewa, an aunt of my father.

Mame Asuantsewa, a native of Elmina was also a prominent fish trader in Obuasi just as my grandma and great grandma. They all belonged to the Catholic Community in Obuasi and were members of St. Cecilia Singing band in the Church.

Mame Asuantsewa was the leader of the delegation that approached my grandma and great grandma to ask them to allow their nephew, Richard Kow Sam to marry Emelia Turkson…
